IH MISSISSIPPI VALLEY BLUES FESTIVAL MOVES
DUE TO FLOODING
DAVENPORT, Iowa—The Mississippi Valley Blues
Society tonight announced that it’s taking
the IH Mississippi Valley Blues Festival,
July 3 – 5, to the streets of downtown
Davenport, Iowa.
The festival is being relocated from its
LeClaire Park “home location” due to the
Flood of 2008.
The festival will take place along 2nd
Street in downtown Davenport, and will
utilize the Adler Theater for a portion of
the festivities.
“The City of Davenport has been a supportive
sponsor of our festival for years providing
us with LeClaire Park—our festival’s
permanent home—and we now are rallying
together to support the city with their
flood recovery efforts,” says Ric Burris,
president, Mississippi Valley Blues Society.
“We’re pleased that our festival will remain
downtown Davenport, and that the City and
the Adler Theater are assisting us in taking
the blues to the streets of Davenport.”
According to the Quad Cities Convention and
Visitors Bureau, the festival’s economic
benefit to the area is $2.5 million.
“The Flood of 2008 has Midwest residents
singing the blues, and that’s all the more
reason to make sure our festival goes on as
planned during the Fourth of July holiday
weekend,” says Karen McFarland, IH
Mississippi Valley Blues Festival
spokesperson. “By the holiday, people will
be needing a break from cleanup efforts, or
looking for a festival to attend because of
their hometown festival cancellations. We
welcome everyone to come to the Quad Cities
and enjoy three great days of world-class
music, great food and lots of fun with
family and friends.”
McFarland notes that many Iowa festivals
have had to cancel portions of their event
or find alternative locations. Burlington
cancelled a portion of its Steamboat Days,
Cedar Rapids has cancelled some of its
opening events for Freedom Festival and
Cedar Falls has cancelled most of its
Sturgis Falls events.
“Even though the festival will be in a
different location, festival goers can
expect the same great caliber of artists the
Blues Society has been attracting for the
last 23 festivals—and of course, the same
great fun,” McFarland continues.
Advance three-day passes are available for
$40 and must be purchased before June 30.
One-day tickets will be sold at the gate for
$15. Children ages 14 and under will be
admitted free if accompanied by an adult
with a ticket. Advance tickets may be
purchased at all IH Mississippi Valley
Credit Union branches, the festival’s
presenting sponsor, and at the River
Center/Adler Theatre box office in
Davenport, or through Ticketmaster.
For 24 years, the IH Mississippi Blues
Festival has attracted local, regional and
national legendary blues acts, making it one
of the most highly regarded blues festivals
in the nation. Headliners for this year’s
festival include Koko Taylor, Elvin Bishop,
Denise LaSalle, Otis Taylor and the Black
Banjo Project, Billy Boy Arnold with Jody
Williams and The Homes Brothers, plus
another 22 acts on two stages. For more
information about the festival, artists and
lodging, please visit
www.mvbs.org or call 563-32-BLUES.

WATERMELON SLIM : : NO PAID HOLIDAY

Bill Homans, a.k.a. "Watermelon
Slim" is one of the most
intriguing bluesmen out there. Watermelon
Slim first appeared on the music scene in
the early 1970s as the only
Vietnam veteran to record a
full length LP during the war.
In subsequent years, Slim played with a
variety of famous blues stars, but only
recently has he become a full-time bluesman.
Now that Slim has received a record twelve
Blues Music Award
nominations in the
United States, he is the new
"King of the Blues."
Watermelon Slim is THE HOTTEST name in Blues
right now - with a total of SIX Blues Music
Award Nominations in 2008 - including
Entertainer of the Year, Band of the Year,

BERNIE PEARL : : OLD SCHOOL BLUES

" This is what I do. This is what we do. One
night solo acoustic in a restaurant, next
gig with the band, amp cranked, then in
concert with bass playing to a hushed and
reverent audience. We recorded these sides
in a studio. I sang and played solo and in
ensemble as in a live performance. Though we
did overdub one vocal and one instrumental
track, what you hear is what you can expect
in person. I've been with these guys for
over 20 years. You might say we got a thing
goin' on with the blues. Their artistry in
the studio surpassed anything I could have
hoped for.
Mike Barry also gave huge
support in the practicalities of CD
production."
" When people ask me what style of blues I
play,
Delta, Chicago, New Orleans, West Coast,
or
Texas, I don’t know what to
say, because I’ve learned from everyone. My
acoustic playing reflects the amplified, and
my electric style reflects the acoustic
country blues. All the players I knew were
concerned that their music be carried on,
and in my own way I try to do it. I also
feel enormously privileged to have been
where I could learn to do it under the
guidance of the masters."

KELLY RICHEY : : CARRY THE LIGHT

Guitar virtuoso
Kelly Richey has written and
co-produced an all-original studio
recording,"Carry
the Light", which will
firmly grab the attention of the press and
music fans everywhere. Richey's songwriting
and vocals underscore her powerful,
take-no-prisoners guitar playing, firmly
expressing her genuine talent and
versatility.
Carry the Light, released on her own
Sweet Lucy Records, reflects
every bit of Richey's stellar guitar tone
and style, while propelling her into a new
light as a thoughtful and insightful
singer/songwriter. The 11 tracks range from
personal reflection, contemplation and
illumination to questioning the world we
live in, all the while capturing the
defining sound of
The Kelly Richey Band.
"This CD was written with two dear friends:
one is my guitar mentor,
John Redell, and the other,
Steve Carroll, who came to
me as a guitar student/songwriter," says
Richey.
Richey thought she would record the CD
herself but soon realized she had a much
larger project on her hands and began
seeking a studio and co-producer.
Rick Brantley e ended up
being the perfect complement.
"Rick and I were a great fit. We decided to
bring in session players who could capture
the foundational tracks with perfection and
speed; then, we could place the majority of
our time in capturing the best guitar and
vocal performances that I could produce."
The result is Carry the Light, a compilation
of thought provoking lyrics and powerful
sounds that The Kelly Richey Band make their
own and take to the stage everytime they
perform.

THE 15TH ANNUAL TREMBLANT INTERNATIONAL BLUES FESTIVAL
STARTS TODAY!
 |
|
To highlight the anniversary, Tremblant celebrates 15
years of pure blues from July 4 to 13
Mont-Tremblant, July 2, 2008 – Starting this
Friday, July 4, Mont Tremblant Resort will
host the 15th anniversary of the Tremblant
International Blues Festival. The Festival
will present a brilliant, lively program
throughout the 10 days of free open-air
concerts.
Powerful kick-off weekend
The Festival will start with a bang by
featuring none other than the legendary
Johnny Winter on the Volkswagen stage on
July 5. On the Molson Ex stage, it’ll be
British blues pioneers Savoy Brown heating
up the crowd.
A wild week
At the Acoustic Summit on Monday evening,
Festival-goers will see Ryan Leblanc, Steve
Marriner, Hot Toddy, Dawn Tyler & Paul
Deslauriers, Trevor Finlay and Steve
Strongman. Then Tuesday evening will be
dedicated to a homage to the sadly missed
Jeff Healey with the Jeff Healey’s Blues
Band on the Molson Ex stage. Winner of a
Grammy and known for its interpretation of
La Bamba, the legendary group Los Lobos will
grace the festival for the first time on
Wednesday, July 9. The group will be
preceded by Serbian rising star Ana Popovic.
More big names on the second weekend of the
Festival
On Friday July 11, the 2008 edition of the
Grandes Dames du Blues (Dawn Tyler Watson,
Shakura S’Aida, Angel Forrest and Nanette
Workman) will take the Molson Ex stage by
storm. On Saturday, July 12, the audience
will again this year thrill to the sounds of
blues veteran Bob Walsh on the Volkswagen
stage, incontrovertible pillar of the Québec
music scene. To wind up the day outdoors
before heading for the bars, it’s Pinetop
Perkins, who spent much of the last century
defining piano blues and who will be
celebrating his 95th birthday onstage with
Willie “Big Eyes” Smith and company. For
further program details, check

The greener Festival
This year, several initiatives have been
taken to reduce the impact of the event on
the environment. For example, the
organization will use recycled paper
wherever possible, will urge volunteers,
artists and visitors to reuse and recycle
and will avoid using products that are
non-recyclable or hard to recycle.

is presented by Volkswagen in collaboration
with Molson Ex. Van Houtte, the Ville de
Mont-Tremblant, Galaxie, Archambault and

BRAND NEW RELEASE FROM DELTA GROOVE
BRAND NEW RELEASE:
JACKIE PAYNE STEVE EDMONSON BAND “OVERNIGHT
SENSATION”
AVAILABLE EXCLUSIVELY THROUGH DELTA GROOVE
UNTIL JULY 22ND!
The dynamic duo of vocalist
Jackie Payne and guitarist
Steve Edmonson
return to the spotlight with yet another
soul/blues gem on their latest recording
"Overnight Sensation." But don't let the
album title fool you; these two have been at
it for years honing their skills and
perfecting their craft with countless
appearances on stages at festivals and clubs
around the globe including a three month
stint in Thailand, right after the big
tsunami of 2004.
Their Delta Groove debut “Master of the
Game” was heralded by critics and fans alike
topping many year-end lists by DJs and radio
programmers across the country. The album
also garnered a 2007 Blues Music Award
nomination for Soul Blues Album of the Year,
while vocalist Jackie Payne has now been
recognized by The Blues Foundation two
consecutive years in a row earning two BMA
nominations for Soul Blues Male Artist of
the Year.
On their sophomore effort for Delta Groove,
Jackie Payne and Steve Edmonson demonstrate
once again their mastery of the fine art of
timeless rhythm & blues delivered with style
and flair that recall the classic sounds of
Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding and Bobby
"Blue" Bland. "Overnight Sensation" is a
terrific example of this dynamic and
wickedly tight band, which also features
bassist Bill Singletary and drummer Nick
Otis, along with the “Sweet Meet Horns”
consisting of Carl Green on tenor and alto
sax and Lech Wiersynski on trumpet, as they
take an explosive romp through another
sweaty set of Gospel, Soul, Blues and R&B.
Album produced by David Z. (B.B. King, Etta
James, Buddy Guy)
